Prep for Your Big Shoot: A Guide for UNC Grads

1. Book Your Photoshoot Early

Stay Ahead of the Crowd by Scheduling in Advance
As graduation nears, popular locations fill up fast. I recommend securing your appointment about four months beforehand. For a May graduation, aim for late March or early April photosession for the best experience.
Why plan ahead? The final weeks of the semester can lead to long lines at iconic spots like the Old Well. Early bookings allow for capturing stunning moments with less waiting, all while enjoying the beauty of campus in bloom and the pleasant weather.

2. Select Your Signature Tar Heel Setting

UNC offers breathtaking settings, but think beyond the usual spots.
The Classics: The Old Well, the Bell Tower, and Wilson Library steps.

Business School: The lovely red-brick courtyards and modern amenities create an elegant backdrop ideal for graduation photos and LinkedIn profiles.

UNC School of Law: Many law graduates prefer to commemorate this milestone at their school, often donning tailored suits under their regalia for a sophisticated and professional look.

The Coker Arboretum: Did you study in the grass near the flowers and pathways?

Let me know if you want to try to add in a favorite location in addition to, or instead of, the classics.

3. Plan Your Outfit Thoughtfully

UNC Student Stores: Your primary source for official grad regalia.
Facebook Marketplace/Groups: Explore “Free & For Sale” groups for opportunities to purchase gently-used gowns at reduced prices.

Be sure to wear something that’s comfortable and makes you feel confident beneath your gown. Ladies typically wear a dress and sandals and guys typically wear a button up shirt with tie, slacks and nice shoes and socks.

Color Options: White, cream, and soft neutrals beautifully complement Carolina Blue.

Contrast Matters: If you’re wearing a black gown for your Master’s or PhD, steer clear of a black outfit underneath—it can fade into the background in photos.

The Wrinkle Rule: Steam your gown as soon as it arrives! While I can retouch images, digitally removing wrinkles isn’t possible. If you need to iron, use low heat with a fabric barrier to prevent damage.

Gentlemen - We might catch a glimpse of your socks while seated. And don't forget about grooming your beard and nose hairs!

Ladies - If wearing nail polish, ensure it’s fresh and unchipped. Use hair spray to manage any flyaway hairs.

4. Incorporate Meaningful Props, but Keep It Simple.

Think about including fun items like:
A personalized graduation cap.
Your favorite mug from Open Eye or Perennial.
A Rameses plush toy or your treasured student ID.
A celebratory bottle of champagne (just remember to pop it away from crowded areas).
Please Note: No-confetti and no-glitter policy for environmental reasons. Cleanup can be difficult and harmful.
Props aren’t mandatory; sometimes, focusing purely on you makes for the best experience.

5. HAVE FUN!

This is a special time in your life so let's enjoy the experience and try not to stress over the little things. Let's have fun!
